So this is a little late…I kind of forgot this existed! Anyway, on to the post!
I think that for a lot of these texts, it’s kind of hard for most contemporary readers to relate. In the articles, we almost always find a woman who is young, beautiful, and naïve (a dangerous trio and apparently a rake magnet). These women, from promises of love and marriage sleep with the guy or otherwise compromise their virtue and lose all respectability and standing in the public eye. She is disowned and shunned, sometimes ends up pregnant, sometimes becomes a prostitute, and in the end dies. For most readers today, while some of these elements are still around, I would say this hardly ever happens exactly like this.
I’m sure that women are still seduced and tricked by jerky men, this will probably always be something that happens. Where I think we divert is the whole shunning and disowning of the equation. Some really conservative or religious families might do this, especially if she ended up pregnant, but I think that in main stream society, this girl wouldn’t be seen as too different (sadly) from many of her peers. I mean she’s looked down on for sleeping around or whatever, but she’s probably not going to get kicked out of her house.
However, one thing that I did notice was the fact that Arabella Artless got pregnant at 15, which is still, to this day, taboo. It’s not so bad these days if the girl is out of high school, late teens, but at 15 she is a sophomore. She can’t even drive yet! I think its interesting that during both time periods, the age would have been taboo, but back in the day the pregnancy itself was major as well as the age, while only the age is the really taboo thing today.
Does this make sense? I feel like I’m not expressing myself well!
